Come and be a part of this exciting event. The California Capital Book Festival will depend on volunteers to run the Festival. Lots of fun opportunities - be a goodwill ambassador for the Festival and assist our many authors. More info on the volunteer positions is available below the application.

Volunteer Opportunities

Author Escorts (must be age 20 or older)
Escorts may need to work additional time to complete assignment with their assigned author(s).
  • assist with author check-in and hospitality at the Festival
  • escort the author(s) to their program/panel location
  • escort the author(s) from the program/panel location to the author signing area and stay with the author(s) until the end of the assigned book-signing time
  • serve as "gofer" for the author(s) as needed during book signing, for items such as Festival provided refreshments
  • must become familiar with Festival layout so as to escort author to various destinations
  • must attend (one of two) mandatory training session either Friday, October 24 5:00pm or Saturday, October 25 8:30am
Book Signing Area
Assist authors and our guest in getting their books signed.
  • greet visitors and authors
  • prepare author signing areas
  • help maintain traffic flow, establishing lines for author signings
  • assist in the set-up for each author by placing their book signage
Event Monitors
A plum assignment - you get to see those very popular presentations.
  • prepare rooms before and after each presentation
  • count those in attendance
  • monitor late entrances such as managing doors so they don't slam/make noise, exits and hall noise as needed
  • generally help with crowd control as attendees enter and exit presentations
Information Tent
Fun assignment - you will be in the middle of all activities.
  • provide maps, directions, and information to Festival attendees
  • assist with locating programs and activities
  • answer festival-related questions
  • welcome people to the festival, and present a positive, helpful attitude to festival-goers
Children’s Demonstration & Activities
Kids and families are always fun!
  • assist with author presentations as needed; tasks may include passing out supplies to children, assisting children with activities, and escorting author to signing area
  • help transition the Kids Alley between presentations
  • guide children of all ages (ranging from preschool through middle school) with various crafts and activities
  • direct children and parents in the area and answer questions
  • keep the area neat
  • assist with setup and tear down of demonstration materials, chairs, and signage
  • greet parents and children, assist as needed
  • be friendly, fun, and flexible
Volunteer Check-In
Really fun assignment. Get to meet and greet hundreds of excited volunteers.
  • greet volunteers at the Volunteer Room
  • assist with checking in volunteers
  • distribute volunteer T-shirts
  • direct volunteers to the location of their assignment
  • may be asked to float to other assignments if need demands
Media/Press Assistants
  • checking in members of the media and issuing press passes
  • assist the media director in setting-up press availabilities for media and authors
